Anti-ageing products are part of a 250-billion-dollar industry, but until recently, scientists had yet to discover a longevity elixir that stood up to medical scrutiny.

 

Researchers believe they are getting closer however thanks to a vitamin B like compound called Nicotinamide Riboside or NR. NR is a compound that along with synergistic products like Resveratrol, increase the production of NAD + in cells- Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide.

 

NAD+ is a molecule found in all living cells and is critical for regulating cellular energy and maintaining essential functions in the body.

 

NAD+ cannot be administered as a supplement to have effects but must be produced in cells. Levels of NAD+ in people and animals decrease significantly with ageing and research scientists have found that increasing NAD+ in old mice causes than to look and act younger as well as living longer than expected.

 

In a March 2017 study published in the Journal of Science, researchers fed old mice compounds that raise NAD+ levels. Within a few hours the NAD+ levels in the mice had risen significantly.

 

 

 

In seven days the tissue, muscle strength and even appearance of 2 year old mice was approaching that of young 2 month old ones. Similar research has been undertaken with twin mice.

 

In another experiment an old mouse that was treated with NAD+ producing molecules for 2 weeks was tested on a treadmill for exercise performance. The researcher was surprised to discover that the computer program for the experiment shut down as the mouse’s performance was so strong it overshot the parameters.

 

Sufficient levels of NAD+ in living things is one of the closest strategies we have to a fountain of youth says David Sinclair, the head professor of ageing research at Harvard Medical School. “it is one of the most important molecules for life to exist, and without it we would die in 30 seconds.
